The Best Time of Year to Pour Concrete on Long Island

Concrete does not "dry"; it cures through a chemical reaction that needs water and the right temperature. That is why the weather on pour day, and in the days after, has a real effect on how strong and durable your driveway, patio or walkway turns out. Here is how we think about timing on Long Island.
Why temperature matters
When it is too cold, curing slows down, and if fresh concrete freezes before it has gained enough strength, the surface can be damaged. When it is very hot, especially with sun and wind, the surface can lose water too quickly, which makes finishing harder and can lead to surface cracking. Moderate temperatures give the crew the most control.
Spring
Spring is a popular time to pour once the ground has thawed and nights stay above freezing. It is also when many homeowners first see what winter did to their driveway and steps. The catch is rain: we watch the forecast closely, because heavy rain on a fresh pour can damage the surface.
Summer
Summer is prime season for patios and outdoor living projects, and the long days help. On hot days, crews often start early, and the new concrete needs to be kept from drying out too fast while it cures.
Fall
Many contractors consider fall one of the best times to pour on Long Island: temperatures are moderate and humidity is lower. The key is to leave time for the concrete to cure before hard freezes and before it sees its first de-icing salt. Plan fall projects early so they are finished well ahead of winter.
Winter
Concrete can be poured in cold weather with the right precautions, but for most residential driveways, patios and walkways it is usually better to plan for a milder window. Winter is a good time to get an estimate, choose finishes and get on the schedule for spring.
After the pour
- Keep foot traffic off until we tell you it is ready, and vehicles off longer.
- Do not use de-icing salts on new concrete during its first winter; use sand for traction instead.
- Ask about sealing, especially for stamped concrete and driveways.
