Drainage Solutions for Long Island Homes

Water is the number one enemy of concrete and masonry. It undermines bases, pushes on walls, heaves slabs in a freeze and ends up at your basement door. Drainage is one of the core services at Masoncrete Builders: we look at where water comes from, where it collects and where it can be carried away, then build the fix into the concrete and masonry around it.

A common example is the outside basement entrance (also called an areaway or stairwell) sits below grade, so it collects water. When its drain clogs or its walls and caps deteriorate, water ends up at your basement door. Masoncrete Builders rebuilds basement entrances: new wall caps, parged walls, a new concrete floor pitched to a drain, and sump pump and drain-line work.

Project spotlight: a basement entrance rebuild on Long Island

In September 2026 we rebuilt the basement entrance at a brick home on Long Island, documented over four visits. The crew formed and poured new concrete caps on the walls, installed a sump pump in a new basin with a PVC discharge line run through a trench, set a new areaway drain and grate, parged the walls smooth and poured a new concrete floor. See the full before-and-after project.

How we approach drainage

  1. Find the source. Roof runoff, a clogged or missing drain, a floor or patio pitched the wrong way, or water coming over a wall.
  2. Plan the discharge. Water has to go somewhere: a drain line, a sump pump discharge or a properly graded surface.
  3. Build it in. Drains, grates, sump basins and pitched concrete are set as part of the floor, slab or wall work, not added as an afterthought.

Drainage also goes hand in hand with retaining walls (water behind a wall is what makes it fail) and with every poured concrete slab we pitch.

Walkout basements

We also work on walkout basement stairs and walls. Our Instagram has a walkout basement project that started with worn concrete steps between block walls; the "before" photo is below.

Drainage FAQ

Why does water collect at my basement door?
Often the areaway drain is clogged or missing, the floor is not pitched to the drain, or water is coming over the walls. We look at all three.
Do you install sump pumps?
Yes. The project on this page included a new sump basin, pump and PVC discharge line.
Can you add a drain to an existing stairwell?
In many cases, yes, as part of a new floor pour. We will look at where the water can be discharged.
